HANOI: Vietnam, chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), expressed concern Saturday at the "worsening situation in Thailand" and called on all sides to avoid violence, state media reported.

"Vietnam, as the chair of ASEAN, is concerned about the worsening situation in Thailand and calls on relevant parties to refrain from violence and seek peace talks," the foreign ministry said, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga also expressed hopes that the situation would soon be stabilised in the interest of the Thai people and for the sake of peace and stability in the region, it said.

More than 20 people have been killed in clashes between security forces and anti-government protestors in the Thai capital since Thursday night.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva vowed Saturday no turning back as the army threatened a crackdown on thousands of "Red Shirt" protesters.

ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Member states normally do not comment on the internal affairs of fellow members owing to a policy of non-interference.
